Enjoy your journey- Every inch is beautiful!
In the 18th-century county town of Perth all the main supermarkets are open daily. For Morrison's from the more northerly of the two A9 roundabouts, the Inveralmond roundabout, head for central Perth and follow signs for the St. Catherine's Retail Park. After stocking up, follow the A9 northward. There's petrol and diesel once you leave the A9 in the village of Kinloch Rannoch daily during normal business hours.
A few miles north of Pitlochry, turn left following signs for the B8019 to Tummel Bridge and Kinloch Rannoch. Soon after leaving the A9, you turn left again to cross the Linn of Tummel, with a fine view of the river passing through well-wooded banks. Then a winding country road takes you through woodlands past the quaint Victorian gate-lodge known as The Witch's Cottage and then along the north shore of Loch Tummel to Queen's View, where Queen victoria stopped to admire the long westerly prospect over the length of Loch Tummel to the elegant summit ridge and peak of Schiehallion, the Fairy Mountain, the exact geographical centre of Scotland. Continue to the Tummel Inn (01882 634272) at Strathtummel where a warm and friendly welcome awaits you.
Carry on to Tummel Bridge and see the packhorse bridge. Then head for Kinloch Rannoch. In the village, stop for tea at Post Taste (01882 632533) or, a bit further on across the bridge, The Country Store (01882 632306) for your provisions and newspapers. The Rannoch Smokery (01882 632344) makes the tastiest smoked venison in Scotland. For a meal, try Bunrannoch House (01882 632407), a fine country house about four miles from Carie, where Jenny Skeaping will cook splendidly for you. From Kinloch Rannoch, take the South Loch Rannoch Road (the ancient Road to the Isles) along the southern shore of the loch for 3.5 miles from the village. Cross an ancient stone bridge over the Allt na Bogair (the Carie Burn) and immediately turn right between stone pillars. Follow the farm track along the burn northward towards the loch. Pass the steadings and continue to the cottages at the end of the track, where we'll make you welcome and take you to your cottage.
Or...in short
Head North from Perth on the A9, after Pitlochry turn left onto the B8019 sign-posted to Tummel Bridge and Kinloch Rannoch. Drive into the Village, past the Village Square, turn left over the stone bridge following signs for the South Loch Road and turn right after the Country Store shop sign-posted South Loch Road and keeping the loch close to you on your right for about three and a half miles until grazing land begins to come between you and the loch and you go over a small stone bridge of Allt na Bogair (the Carie Burn) and turn immediately right through two stone pillars (opposite the Rannoch Forestry Commission sign on your left) and drive on down the drive with the Carie Burn on your right until you reach the stone buildings, the first of which is the Factor's House, and the second, further down the drive, is Morag's Cottage.
