The Carie Estate

Carie is the ancient and historic seat of Clan Robertson of Struan, who once owned the whole southern shore of Loch Rannoch. The Clan chiefs established themselves in a fine house where the Carie Burn, the Allt na Bogair, thunders into Loch Rannoch.

The Chief of the Clan fought loyally beside Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745 and then retired to Carie. Though Bonnie Prince Charlie was regrettably defeated and the English treated his supporters harshly, the Chief was so well-respected in Rannoch that King George's forces found it expedient not to move against the Carie estate until he died. While two thousand of the Chief's clansmen were carrying his coffin on its last journey of 14 miles over the pass to the cemetery of Struan, the King's Forfeited Estates Commissioners moved in and took over the estate, turning the inbye land and steadings into a sawmill for timber from the Black Wood of Rannoch.

The house burned down in 1908! But....

The Commissioners' successors in title, the Forestry Commission, held the estate until the mid-20th century. It is now privately owned once more, and a new laird's house has been created by extending and renovating the surviving buildings.
